“Burn the idea into the consciousness of every man that he can get well regardless of anyone. The only condition is that he trust in God and clean house.”

“Burn the idea into the consciousness of every man that he can get well regardless of anyone. The only condition is that he trust in God and clean house.” Alcoholics Anonymous (1939) · Chapter 7 · Working With Others
Where it comes from

From the close of Chapter 7 — instructions for talking with a newcomer whose home life is still in chaos.

Today’s reflection

Recovery that depends on circumstances isn’t recovery; it’s a weather forecast. The book’s claim is bolder: well regardless of anyone — the spouse who doubts you, the boss who remembers, the friend still drinking. Other people get a vote on your day, but not on your sobriety. The two conditions listed are both inside jobs: trust, and housecleaning. Everything outside that fence is scenery.

Frequently asked questions

North Carolina Recovery: Common Questions

How long does detox take in North Carolina?
Medical detox typically lasts 3-10 days depending on the substance. Alcohol detox is usually 5-7 days, opioid detox 5-10 days, and benzodiazepine detox can take 2-8 weeks. North Carolina detox centers provide 24/7 medical supervision throughout the process.
Is medical detox dangerous?
Withdrawal from certain substances (alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids) can be medically dangerous without supervision. North Carolina medical detox centers provide medications to manage withdrawal symptoms safely, monitoring vital signs, and preventing complications.
What happens after detox in North Carolina?
After completing detox, patients typically transition to inpatient or outpatient treatment for ongoing therapy and support. Many North Carolina facilities offer seamless transitions to their treatment programs. Following up detox with continued care significantly reduces relapse risk.
What can I bring to a detox center?
Most detox centers allow comfortable clothing, basic toiletries, prescription medications (in original containers), identification, and insurance cards. Facilities typically restrict electronics, outside food, weapons, and any substances. Call your chosen North Carolina facility for specific guidelines.
How do I find the right recovery program in North Carolina?
Consider the type of treatment needed (detox, inpatient, outpatient, sober living), insurance coverage, location preferences, and specialized programs. Browse directory listings in North Carolina and call providers to confirm current availability, services, and payment options.
Do facilities in North Carolina accept insurance?
Many treatment centers and detox facilities in North Carolina accept major insurance plans including Medicaid, Medicare, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare. Sober living homes typically require private pay but some partner with treatment centers for covered clinical components.
